A Guide to Tractor Accessories

The right tractor can make your life much easier, helping you to complete your tasks in a timely, efficient manner. The same can also be said for the best tractor accessories, as the right additional parts can help you optimise its use and save you from needing multiple, expensive machines.

In addition to this, having the right attachments and accessories can make operating a tractor less labour-intensive, which will also save valuable time and effort across activities such as farming, agriculture, landscaping, and construction work.

So, to provide you with a useful checklist of the best tractor accessories, we’ll take you through some of the spare parts, attachments, and extras that you might need.

Popular tractor accessories

Below are some of the most popular types of attachments that a tractor operator might choose to add to their vehicle for various applications.

Front loaders

Front loaders are bucket-like attachments for the front of your tractor, and are typically used to scoop up materials like sand, gravel, and hay. Front loaders are incredibly useful across different industries: being able to lift a load and move from A to B prevents you having to push it along the floor, which could potentially leave debris behind or damage the machine.

You may also find front loaders with spikes attached to a metal frame. These are largely used to pick up hay bales and move them around a barn or farmyard.

Quick hitches

This is a must-have piece of equipment for anybody looking to attach a variety of different tractor accessories and attachments. There are different types of hitches but a quick hitch is a multi-purpose option designed for use with a number of implements.

Being able to change attachments with one universal hitch means you can work far more quickly and efficiently.

Other types of hitch used to connect tractors to attachments and trailers include a ball hitch and a hitch pin. These ensure the tractor is securely connected when travelling along public roads or across fields. You may also wish to consider a drawbars as another effective alternative for towing.

Mowers

By attaching a purpose-built implement to your tractor, you can quickly transform it into a heavy-duty mower that can deal with grass, weeds, and even some types of bushes. There are a number of different mowers, each designed to tackle different terrains and vegetation types:

  • Flail mower: Great for heavy grass and more challenging vegetation.

  • Finishing mower: This type of mower attachment uses overlapping blades to create a vacuum that brings flat grass to the surface, which makes it ideal for ground maintenance and large lawns, golf courses, etc.

  • Rotary mower: This type of mower features a blade that rotates at a high speed to chop grass and weeds.

  • Sickle bar mower: These are mainly used for mowing hay, grass, and other light vegetation using a series of triangular blades and a speedy scissor motion.

Spreaders and sprayers

There are a variety of different spreaders and sprayers that can be attached to a tractor to disperse things like seeds, manure, fertiliser, and salt. Some spreaders and sprayers can be towed to the rear of the tractor while others can be attached to the front.

Backhoes

This is a type of digger that is typically attached to the back of the tractor and operated hydraulically. Common uses include digging trenches, holes, and foundations, demolition, excavation, landscaping, paving roads, and transporting light construction materials, amongst other things.

Trailer connections

You may wish to move your tractor from one location to another. In this case, you’ll need the appropriate trailer connections so you can do this efficiently and most importantly, safely. This includes an emergency brake cable, a male plug, and a female pin.

Additional tractor accessories

Other common types of tractor attachments include:

  • Rotary tillers or disk harrows, which are used to break up soil to combine with topical treatments such as nutrient mixtures.

  • Box blades and graders are used to break up and level hard ground surfaces.

  • Snow blowers are used for clearing large amounts of snow quickly.

  • Pallet forks can be attached to lift and move heavy loads.

  • Rakes and ballers can be used to prep and bale hay on farms.

  • Brush guards are designed to protect the vehicle from dents, scratches, and other damage.

Spare tractor parts

As well as additional tractor accessories that can be attached to your machine to expand its functionality, there are several other spare tractor parts that you should be aware of.

Replacement seats

From time to time, a tractor will need a replacement seat in order for the operator to remain safe and comfortable. This may be because of general wear-and-tear, but it could also be due to more specific problems that need resolving – such as water drainage channels no longer performing as they should.

When purchasing a replacement tractor seat, make sure you find one that’s specifically compatible with your vehicle. The KAB P1 Seat, for example, is designed to be used with small agricultural and turf-care machinery.

Tyres and wheels

Tractors are often navigating rough terrain or challenging surfaces that can wear and tear on your tyres and wheels fairly quickly. It’s important to keep tractor tyres in top condition for optimum performance, but also to protect the vehicle and the operator’s safety.

Smaller miscellaneous parts

There is a range of other small, miscellaneous tractor accessories that you might need, such as:

  • Link pins and link balls, which are various small parts that are required to run a tractor with its various accessories and attachments.

  • Switches (e.g. a switch indicator).

  • Mirror head (we stock a universal mirror head that is compatible with a majority of machines).

  • Lights (e.g. halogen rear lights, LED work light).

Other tractor-running essentials

Fuel, oil, and grease are all crucial to keep your vehicles and machinery well-lubricated and running properly. That’s why, alongside keeping spare tractor accessories and attachments, it is so important to stay stocked up so you don’t fall short or cause lasting damage to your tractor.

Fuel

It goes without saying that your tractor is going to need fuel to run. So, it is always a good idea to have some on hand. However, you need to make sure it is the right fuel for your vehicle or this could be a costly error to resolve.

If you use your vehicle regularly, or have multiple machines, and you want full control over your fuel levels, you could consider investing in a 2,500-litre bunded fuel tank. This ensures efficient dispensing, secure storage, and reassurance you won’t run out quickly once the tank is full.

We would also recommend equipping yourself with an anti-spill nozzle compatible with your machine and equipment to support precise decanting. Spillages can lead to serious fire risks and unnecessary wastage of fuel – both of which could be costly.

Oil

Tractors, in much the same way as other vehicles, require frequent oil changes to lubricate the engine parts to keep them running smoothly. Oil also prevents friction, which can cause damage to the parts and/or result in dangerous levels of heat.

There are many different types of tractor oil, so make sure you are using the correct one for your machine. Most oils come in bottles with lids designed for you to pour them easily. However, you could also decant it into a can or even a combo fuel and oil can.

Grease

Grease is a critical part of any mechanical machine running smoothly, and this applies to your tractor too. Grease will act as a sealant and a protective layer in joints and hitch pivot points to prevent friction, damage, and malfunction.

There are also some different types of oils that perform the same job as grease, keeping parts such as gears moving smoothly.
